Cleeve School

...wanted to build a secure wireless LAN.

Cleeve school decided to move over to a wireless environment. At first they looked at a traditional solution to set up a firewall for the wireless network. They also wanted all traffic to be encrypted. Soon the IT manager realised that an ordinary Firewall with IP-sec encryption would not work because they could not install clients on all connecting PC:s. The devices could be anything from windows PC:s to Mac:s and Linux. The school then looked of a combination of a firewall and an SSL solution but it turned out to be too costly. Added to the problem some of the applications used where not easily supported by ordinary SSL solutions. The AppGate solution solved all of their problems and gave them a remote access solution for the whole school for free.

SAAB Systems

...needed a way to secure communication to mobile devices.

A key principle of the WCU (Wearable Command Unit) system was to provide a robust mobile communication platform that could link different rescue agencies in the field eg. fire, ambulance, and police, which might normally use different communications systems or networks. Rather than introducing yet more proprietary communications equipment, Saab Systems wanted a system that could be based on any ordinary mobile device – phone, PDA, laptop – and that would deliver a dependable connection to the network even as units were travelling en route to an incident, AppGate provided that solution.

Scott Brownrigg, an international architectural practice

...wanted to provide secure remote access.

Scott Brownrigg decided to invest in a remote access solution to enhance communication and working practices – to enable staff to work from home, and provide online access for external partners. Initially they selected an IPSec VPN solution but discovered a number of limitations with the system. Scott Brownrigg needed a more flexible, more granular and more secure access control solution that would protect the business and support the organisation into the future. AppGate’s powerful access control functionality ensures the system administrators can control the level of access each user is permitted, preventing unauthorised access to resources on the network. Internet access is channelled through the AppGate server via IP Tunnelling, and Policy Manager ensures that acceptable usage policies are enforced even when people are working away from the office, thus protecting the network from malware or Trojans.

Stratford-upon-Avon College

...wanted to connect the college network to Warwickshire Council's library IT network.

Stratford-upon-Avon College in Warwickshire attracts students from across the UK and abroad. The concept was to connect the college network to Warwickshire Council's library IT network so that students could use the computer facilities at their local library to access the college and their classroom environment. Security was a key requirement as students would be accessing the college network from a public environment. A feature of this project was the requirement to extend the secure network outwards as opposed to having remote workers connecting inwards. “The technology behind it is stunning,” added Julie Taylor, Project Manager for Stratford-upon-Avon College. “The solution is unique because it does not require any additional software to be installed on the library machines. It is therefore expandable and can be used at any participating library or remote location.”
